What class do you compete in, and why?
I started racing the car in STH (what is now GST). We have since pivoted and started racing in G Street for the last 2 years. I like competing in the class for a lot of reasons. Its cheap and easy to enter, doesn't jeopardize the reliability of what is also my daily driver but most important; it pushes me to be a better driver by not relying on making the car faster with more parts but becoming a better driver with improving myself as a driver and my technique.
What got you into motorsports? Any experience before autocross?
I had always wanted to race cars in some format but never knew autocross existed. I had literally no practical experience except maybe a go kart day. It wasn't until 21' that a close friend (Shout out Darius!) from college had me sign up for an event in Susquehanna region. I took my car as it was at the time (my daily set of tires and lowering springs) and actually ended up winning my class that day. It was all over after that, I was hooked. I started signing up for our regional events the following year and took first in class that year!
Tell us about your car.
The car came first. I had purchased the car in January the year I attended my first autocross. It checked all the boxes of what I just wanted in a daily driver at the time. Manual, reliable and fun to drive without breaking the bank. It also didn't help I had to pass it everyday for 2 weeks when pulling into work so temptation got a hold of me. It has been a fantastic platform to learn the basics with. The car is fast when driven correctly but slow enough I'm not gonna hurt myself if I make a mistake. When you drive it correctly, it is really a rewarding experience. I do all the work on the car but my co-driver Will handles a lot of the actual setup at events which is great because I would never have worried about half of it if it wasn't for him. The car doesn't have a lot of modifications due to class restrictions but my favorite mod would definitely be the rear sway bar from Karcepts. It's aggressive and really brings the back end of the car to life when racing.
Best moment on track?
One of my favorite moments I had was last year at the shared Pocono event. The course was fun and fast, the competition was brutal and I felt electric the whole time. Coming back after getting a winning run and celebrating with Will, my co-driver, after going toe to toe with him and the other drivers just felt incredibly rewarding and satisfying.
My biggest accomplishments I would say was winning G-Street last year and taking 4th at Nationals this year. G street was extremely competitive last year in our region and was the first year I truly felt like I had earned the trophy for my class. I definitely wanted to take a podium seat at Nationals this year and initially, I was really down on myself for getting close but not taking it. Taking the step back after the initial emotions though, I really am proud of how far I reached at my first National event. It was a hard fought event and shows me I am that much closer to reaching my goals as a driver!
Congratulations on receiving the Les Handley scholarship! How was Solo Nationals?
Nationals was way more than I ever could have expected! It's HUGE, imagine Racewars in The Fast and The Furious. The competition is tough and everyone is super committed to winning but almost anyone will chit chat with you and help you out, even your competitors. Then, at the end of the day, get ready to drink and party because it has its own nightlife scene! Getting to hang out with the region in a party capacity was a blast whether it was at one of the mini events or just relaxing back in paddock with everyone. A piece of advice I would offer is definitely sign up EARLY for practice sessions. If you do miss a test and tune sign up but can find a Evo School class, do it. I got one and had an hour of seat time on a 30 second course and with only a handful of other drivers also going. I was literally doing hot laps most of the time and got probably close to 20-25 runs at least to really warm up. There is an instructor if you need it but otherwise, it's a huge time slot to really setup up and practice.
Why Philly SCCA?
I chose Philly Region just based on location initially but even if I wasn't close at this point, I would still come back here because I truly believe we have one of, if not THE best regions you could ask for. Philly hosts a ton of events that you won't always find in other regions. We have a huge host of amazing drivers to compete and learn from and everyone of them is willing to help you at any point. One of the most notable things I experienced at Nationals was how committed our region is to helping our team. Without asking, I saw drivers surrounded by a pit crew helping the driver get ready for runs, go over the course/data and just be a teammate. It is an honor to be part of this team. I could shout out a ton of region members. First and foremost would be my Co-Driver Will Brunner. Our friendship started here in this region and having him alongside me as my partner and my biggest competitor means the world to me. I wouldn't be this far along in my journey if not for him. The Slow Honda Boys other members (Rob G and Chris H) for also being a part our small band of slow Hondas. You guys are the greatest! Chris and Matt, Ken Roller, Ken and Amy Houseal, Ryan Leach, Justin C, Simmons and others members or competitors who have supported me, helped me or pushed me as a competitor or a teammate when I needed it, THANK YOU!
Advice for newcomers?
Find and attend an event. Get someone to show you the ropes and have fun. Its cheap, it's fun, and a great way to learn the fundamentals of driving fast. You don't need a crazy performance car to have fun.
